Homesteader’s Market

Welcome to the Homesteader’s Market!

As one of the Cariboo Homesteader group of services, this ‘bulletin board’ features introductions to local farmers, producers and artisans, with details on some of their current offerings. By assisting local producers (we call them ‘Vendors’) with the marketing of their goods, we provide everyone with another convenient way to see what’s available locally.

All Vendors featured on the Homesteaders’ Market are local. Each farmer and gardener offering products here is committed to supplying their customers with the freshest and highest quality vegetables, meats, herbs, eggs, and fruits. The artisans also provide products that are natural, produced from their homes and crafted with a passion!

Whether the Vendor is large or small, providing beef or hand-knit slippers, the folks behind these endeavors share a common thread of dedication to our community, the environment, good health and education. All of the products you buy come directly from the Vendor. There are no resellers, no middle men, and nothing but locally produced and/or grown products from home-based businesses. Have a look below as our Vendors describe their own products, set their own prices, and are selling directly to you. If you have questions or wish to place an order, please contact the Vendor through the links each of them provides.

Our goal is to grow the healthiest food possible for our family as well as our community.

Smoky slab bacon from pasture raised pigs. Delicious, and best of all, you can cut the slices as thick as you want!

Dsc_0342   Cowboy Cookies (1/2 dozen) $5.00

A Cariboo collaboration! Each one a hardy snack in itself. A large oatmeal cookie with chocolate chips, raisins and pecans. Warning! These may be addicting. 🙂

Dsc_0341   Multi-Grain Bread (unsliced) $5.0o

From my family’s old Mennonite recipe, a beautiful old style bread. Ingredients include: wheat flour, rolled oats, sunflower seeds, poppy seeds, sesame seeds, rolled flax, ground rye, eggs (from our free-range hens) molasses, yeast and sunflower oil.

Dsc_0337   Pork Breakfast Sausage (1-lb packs) $9.00

Made from our pasture raised pigs. These sausages are very lean, with very little grease coming out when cooked. Amazing cut up into an Italian pasta sauce, sausage rolls and, of course, beside a plate of eggs, hash browns and toast. Each one-pound package has ten links.

Horselake1

We are a group of farmers, concerned citizens, and healthy eaters (or at least, aspiring to be) who have purchased shares in the Horse Lake Community Farm Co-operative, which is an agricultural co-op, operating on 133 acres of heritage farm property (aka “the Betty Place”). The Co-op is run by a board of directors, and the Co-op property is leased to member farmers. The land is currently farmed by CEEDS (Community Enhancement and Economic Development Society) who have over 30 years of experience in cooperative agriculture, and whose friends and supporters are the ‘seeds’ of the Co-operative.

Currently available:

Hlcfc_coffee   Coffee – locally roasted beans – 1/2 pound for $7.00

The Horse Lake Farm Co-op has been selling coffee for almost 10 years! We buy fairtrade, organic, and eco-friendly green beans from around the world. Our local roasting partners help us with achieving the perfect roast, usually a medium to dark. We also do green been sales to those who wish to roast to their own specifications. Profits from coffee sales are part of our fund-raising efforts for running the Co-operative.

5dc5239-0813-o_copy   Potatoes – 25 pounds for $30.00

We have Siglinde, Russett, purple and red potatoes. A mix is possible.

Potatoes are organically grown but not certified. We rely on our reputation for growing organically in the Cariboo over the last 35 years.
